8th Grade Math

Where does the curriculum come from?
Our state curriculum is set by the state board of education and then passed on to our state department of education. You can find out what the required objectives are by going to the state department of education's website and choosing Mathematics and then 8th Grade. The site is at:
http://www.sde.idaho.gov/site/content_standards/

Essentially, as an 8th grade team we broke down the state standards in to specific problems and types and then divided them between three quarters of instruction. We chose three rather than four as this will ensure that we have taught as much as we can of the standards before the state tests (ISAT) are given in May.

First quarter we will focus on numbers expressed as decimals, fractions and percents, including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in any of these forms. We will examine the values these numbers have by comparing them and locating them on a number line. We will perform multiple step caclulations by mastering the correct order of operations. The first quarter will also include an introduction to the two prominent measuring systems, standard and metric.

Second quarter will include units of measurement and converting from one unit to another, rates, ratios and proportions and solving problems that involve rate, ratio and proportion. We will examine topics in algebra including: evaluating algebraic expressions, writing and simplifying algebraic expressions and equations from real world problems, solving one and two step equations, expressing and relationships between two variables as a table, as a graph, or as an equation.

Third quarter will include functions as tables, graphs and equations, solving word problems with functions, the elements of geometry, transformations in geometry, congruence and similarity and lines of symmetry, analyzing data through tables charts and graphs, measures of center like mean, median, and mode, probability of equally likely outcomes and predicting outcomes based on probability.
How can I find out what my student is working on?
At the bottom of this page you will see links for Documents and for Lecture Videos. You may see everything that was put up on the screen for the students on the Documents page. These files are saved as pdf documents. You should be able to open them by clicking on them. As I teach new concepts, we will create short video presentations that explain them. View these for review or to see how the subject was presented.
